The elements are added in varying proportions (or combinations) making the material take on different aspects not found in regular carbon steel such as increased hardness, increased corrosion resistance, increased strength, improved formability (ductility); the weldability can also change.
Alloy steels are generally more responsive to heat and mechanical treatments than carbon steels. The heat-treated type is available in both annealed and normalized.
Alloy steel 4130 (chromoly) is a chromium molybdenum alloy steel known for its weldability, ease of fabrication and mild harden ability. It is vacuum degassed to meet the magnetic particle inspection standards of AMS 2301.
Alloy steel 4140 is a oil-hardening, chromium-molybdenum steel with good strength and wear resistance, excellent toughness and ductility, with the ability to resist stress and creep at prolonged high temperatures (up to 1000°F [538°C]).
Alloy steel 4340 has a high fatigue/tensile ratio and maintains strength, ductility and toughness at relatively high temperatures. For an alloy steel, it has relatively excellent non-distorting properties.
