Compressive Strength

Compressive strength is the maximum compressive stress that, under a gradually applied load, a given solid material can sustain without fracturing. We can calculate compressive strength using the following formula:  CS = F/A. The specific test methods and conditions of measurement can affect the measurement of compressive strength. Brittle materials such as cast iron can exhibit high compressive strengths but ultimately fracture. Conversely, some ductile metals such as mild steel have terrific compressive strengths but the actual value is difficult to obtain due to deformation.
