Though the Flames fell to a 3-2 overtime home defeat against Telford Tigers, the night was not a total loss with Spectrum’s men holding the playoff group A top spot thanks to a late Michal Satek strike that ensured a single point, the group lead, and tiebreaker superiority.
Kari Sihvonen buried a Ben Campbell feed to secure a 1-0 Flames lead less than 3 minutes into the contest, but the Tigers made it to the break deadlocked at 1 thanks to a Doug Clarkson goal at 14:34. At nearly the same time point in the middle session, the Tigers took a lead on a Cory McEwen finish of a Lubomir Korhorn cross ice pass. Their advantage held through 40 minutes, but about halfway through the 3rd Surrey’s men squared it with Satek’s one time blast. Overtime decided the evening’s winner, and it was the Tigers who got the extra spoils 90 seconds in when Danny Rose closed it out.
“That was quite a back and forth game, and overall a pretty exciting evening for the teams and fans alike,” said Paul Dixon. “Obviously it was disappointing to come away on the short end of the score, but it was still a result to hold ourselves at the top of the table and take the tiebreaker rights if we need that later. If someone would have told us we would take 3 of 4 points against the league champions during the playoff round we would have taken that for sure, so we are not going to dwell on the overtime outcome. Instead we will look ahead to a big game Friday at Sheffield when we have a chance to lock down a spot in the final 4 weekend at Coventry.”
