Flames come from behind to secure win

Guildford Flames logo Mike Will missed a shutout by a millimetre or two, and the Flames scored 3 unanswered 3rd period goals to recover from a 1-0 deficit and hand the Hull Pirates a 3-1 defeat before a sold out Spectrum crowd. A 15-5 1st period shot advantage for the Flames didn’t make a difference to the score as the clubs reached the break on a scoreless draw.

Andy McKinney knotted the game at a goal each early in the 3rd before the Flames powerplay went to work. With a 5 on 3 manpower advantage Ben Campbell shovelled home a loose puck to close out the first penalty at 53:36 and then Jez Lundin converted the remaining powerplay less than a minute later to put the home team in a 3-1 lead they held through the remaining time including a short 3 on 5 penalty kill during the game’s dying minutes.

“Looking back on the game,” said Paul Dixon, “it is one of those matches where you go away doubly glad that you won because we should have had the game secured much earlier than we did. I don’t think down a goal to start the 3rd was at all a reflection of the flow of play. We had some excellent opportunities to have been in control relatively early, and it was only superb goaltending at their end that kept it so tight. We showed a lot of character in the 3rd to keep the pressure on, despite no scoring success to that point, and our own good goaltending by Mike Will and overall team patience finally paid off when we finally got something to go through to tie it and get the win.”
